A much-loved festival fixture, this Open Mic night draws poets and musicians from all over to perform their work. The highlight of the evening is the announcement of the winners of the annual Westival International Poetry Competition, which attracts huge volumes of entries from around the world. With a first prize of €1,000, the competition is judged by three highly acclaimed Irish poets, Ger Reidy, Geraldine Mitchell and John McAuliffe. Many previous winners have gone on to become well-established poets. Hear their work first at The Wyatt!
Presenting Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance: a mash-up of spoken word performance, cinematic guitar soundscapes and big beats, featuring Cursed Murphy, aka spoken word performer and novelist Peter Murphy (John the Revelator, Shall We Gather at the River), Dan Comerford (Frankenstein Bolts), the Gangnus sisters Rebecca, Tamara and Jasmin, and Kevin Dillon (all members of street drum crew Bloco Garman).
Set up and facilitated by Paul Bregazzi & Daragh Bradish, both published poets. Daragh has a collection of poems with Liberties Press & Paul will have his collection out next Spring with Salmon Press. They both read on the night, occasionally there is a loose theme.
Lemme Talk is an open mic night at Poetry Ireland, brought to you in partnership with Slam Sunday. Running on the first Monday of the month, Lemme Talk gives poets, performers and all kinds of wordsmiths a chance to share their work with a friendly audience. It’s a non-competitive open mic and each night also features at least one special guest.
All Bespoken Word sessions are special but this one is specifically geared to the interesting times we live in. It will have escaped few people (at least, in West Cork) that we can no longer trust "our environment" to be the horn of plenty that it probably never was. Chuck in some coins, pull a lever, out rolls produce, we consume.
