Skibbereen spoken word group introduce new theatre initiative
Ten-Past-Ten Theatre is a new dedicated drama slot that comes at the end of each month's Speakeasy Sessions in Skibbereen.
The idea is to provide a space for drama of all kinds - short plays, monologues, puppetry, and scenes. The Sessions, organized by Miriam O’Donovan, run on the last Tuesday of the month at The Tanyard. These monthly spoken-word events showcase all forms of creative expression – poetry, story-telling, readings, performance, puppetry, and mime.
The Speakeasy Sessions aim to provide an opportunity for local, regional and national artists to share their work and talents in as wide a variety of formats as possible. To pursue the new initiative Ten-Past-Ten Theatre they have reached out to a number of theatre groups in the area and are exploring ways of working collaboratively with as many as possible. They are looking to present short plays, monologues, scenes, experimental theatre – solo performances, troupes, groups, and theatre collectives and their monthly events past of this new theatre initiative. Miriam O’Donovan outlines the progress of the initiative with the collaborative efforts and involvement of theatre groups in Cork.
“Minnow Productions performed at our first Ten-Past-Ten slot in October - an excerpt from their forthcoming end of November collaboration with Cork Arts Theatre - an adaptation of Jerome K Jerome's "Three Men In A Boat" - which was very well received on the night. So we are very pleased to have got off to such a good start.”
The Speakeasy Sessions, is still quite a young event with its first event happening in early 2019. O’Donovan’s plans for the event are ever expanding.
“We are very happy with how it is going so far, having hosted a very successful Storytelling competition during Skibbereen Arts Festival. Our ambition for Ten-Past-Ten Theatre is that it should be as varied as possible and to create a well-supported space for both established and new drama talent to share work...We are also looking at forming our own small troupe and are planning a dedicated short play event during 2020.”
The next Speakeasy Sessions takes place on 26th November at 8.00pm in The Tanyard on Mainstreet Skibbereen. For more information and to get involved visit the website here: skibbereenspeakeasy.com/ten-past-ten-theatre/
