Listowel Gears Up for its 6th International Storytelling Festival
As Ireland’s rich storytelling tradition continues to thrive, the 6th Listowel International Storytelling Festival is set to bring a remarkable array of events and performances to the historic town of Listowel from Thursday, 19th September to Sunday, 22nd September. Hosted by the Kerry Writers’ Museum, this festival is a must-attend for anyone passionate about the art of storytelling, poetry, music, and cultural heritage.
One of the highlights of this year's festival is the Story Swap at John B’s with Frances Kennedy, taking place on Saturday, 21st September at 3:30pm. Held at the iconic John B. Keane’s Bar, this event promises an afternoon filled with stories, verse, music, and song, hosted by the talented Bean an Tí, Frances Kennedy. Known for her captivating performances, Kennedy will lead the session, inviting everyone to share in the vibrant storytelling tradition that has been a cornerstone of Irish culture for generations.
This event is part of a broader celebration that spans four days, offering a variety of experiences that cater to all ages and interests. From the Biodiversity Walk Along the River Feale to the Art Exhibitions Launch and the Lunchtime Concert by The Yershovy Sisters, the festival showcases the diverse cultural tapestry of Ireland, blending natural beauty with artistic expression.
Visitors can also look forward to The Amergin Step book launch, a fascinating lecture on Stolen Skulls & Other Stories, and a special Opening Night Concert featuring the acclaimed Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh Trio. Each event is carefully curated to provide a deep dive into Ireland’s storytelling heritage, offering both educational and entertaining experiences.
The festival not only celebrates traditional storytelling but also explores modern interpretations, ensuring that the ancient art form remains relevant and engaging in today’s world. Whether it’s through poetry workshops like The Poetry of Place or the Lunchtime Story & Poetry Swap, there are countless opportunities for participants to immerse themselves in the spoken word and connect with fellow storytellers and listeners.
As part of the festivities, the Culture Night Late: Theatre of the Hearthstone on Friday, 20th September will transform Listowel’s Square into a vibrant carnival-style celebration. Featuring performances by Drum Dance Ireland, the Rogu Mobius Fire Show, and a host of storytellers and musicians, this event encapsulates the lively spirit of the festival, drawing on the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The Listowel International Storytelling Festival is a unique opportunity to experience the magic of storytelling in one of Ireland’s most picturesque settings. Whether you’re a seasoned storyteller or a newcomer eager to listen, there’s something for everyone at this year’s festival.
