The 11th Sneem International Storytelling & Folklore Festival: A Celebration of Tradition and Tales

Nestled between majestic mountains and the serene sea along Ireland's iconic Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way lies the picturesque village of Sneem. From the 8th to 10th of November 2024, this charming locale will once again come alive with tales of wonder, music, and cultural celebration as it hosts the 11th Sneem International Storytelling & Folklore Festival.

Founded on a dream by renowned storyteller Batt Burns, the festival has grown since its inception in 2012 to become a beacon for storytellers and folklore enthusiasts from around the world. Even after Batt's retirement, the festival continues to flourish, honoring his vision by bringing together a diverse array of performers and audiences in a celebration of narrative art.

Sneem, meaning "The Knot" in Gaelic, is renowned for its colorful houses, quaint squares separated by a charming bridge, and a rich tapestry of visitors including Charles de Gaulle, George Bernard Shaw, and Grace Kelly. The village's allure has even attracted filmmakers, with the 2014 movie "The Lobster" featuring its scenic landscapes. Many who visit Sneem find themselves enchanted, often returning or staying indefinitely, captivated by its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

The 2024 festival promises a captivating lineup of events and performers that cater to all ages and interests. The festivities kick off on Thursday evening with an unofficial opening session at Murphy's Loft, where musicians, storytellers, and enthusiasts are invited to share their talents in an intimate and relaxed setting. This session sets the tone for the weekend, fostering a warm and inclusive atmosphere that Sneem is known for.

Friday begins with a deep dive into local history with a session on Kerry's Irish place names, followed by a unique outdoor storytelling experience, "Yarns in the Barn," with esteemed storyteller Colin Urwin. Attendees will embark on a journey through the foothills outside Sneem, where nature and narrative intertwine to create an unforgettable adventure. As the day progresses, festival-goers can enjoy an afternoon of engaging tales from Orla McGovern and a grand storytelling concert in the evening, featuring performances from beloved local talent Bernard Casey and other distinguished guests.

Saturday offers a rich variety of events, starting with a lecture on Japanese culture by Masako Carey, followed by a series of storytelling performances tailored to children and adults alike. Highlights include the launch of Colin Urwin's latest book, "Irish Folk Tales of Coast and Sea," and an open invitation to share stories during a lunchtime swap hosted by Paddy O'Brien. The evening is reserved for two exceptional performances: Masako Carey’s "Ohanashi," which brings Japanese folktales to life, and Colin Urwin’s "The Little Gold Ring," a captivating legend of the Spanish Armada. The day concludes with an informal storytelling club session at Murphy's Loft, where the magic of the spoken word continues late into the night.

The final day of the festival, Sunday, features a lunchtime theatre performance of J.M. Synge’s classic play, "The Shadow of the Glen," by the talented local group Sneem DramSoc. Children's storytelling sessions and an open house and story swap round out the afternoon, leading to a closing session where all participating storytellers come together to wrap up the weekend with shared laughter, reflection, and a sense of anticipation for the next year's festivities.

As always, the Sneem International Storytelling & Folklore Festival is a celebration of community, culture, and the timeless art of storytelling. Tickets for the weekend are available for €60 per person, with individual event tickets also available. Early booking is recommended, especially for limited-capacity events.
